- Increase your water
A high fluid intake is one of the most important methods for preventing kidney stones through diet. In most case, that means you would only need to drink two additional 16-ounce glasses of water each day. Increasing how much water you drink can also improve:
- Skin appearance
- Physical performance
- Weight loss efforts
If drinking a lot of water is difficult for you, lots of different beverages can also help reduce your risk of forming kidney stones. In fact, studies have found that tea and coffee can help reduce your risk, possibly because like water, they also increase your urine output. And even soda and milk don’t appear to increase your risk of forming stones. In addition, the citrate in juices, such as lemon and orange, act as kidney stone inhibitors for calcium based stones.
- Decrease your salt
A high sodium diet increases your risk of forming kidney stones because salt increases your calcium levels and decreases a known stone inhibitor, citrate. Because processed foods often contain higher amounts of salt, the best way to determine the salt content of your food is to always read nutrition labels – and choose low sodium options whenever possible. Decreasing how much salt you eat can also help control or prevent:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Heart failure
- Kidney disease
Together, these two simple steps – increasing your fluids and decreasing your sodium — have been shown to decrease the risk of forming another kidney stone by 50% or more, while improving overall health and wellbeing.
